DESCRIPTION:
A step beyond in safety.
When it comes to the organized destruction of automobiles, no one is more dedicated than Volvo.
In crash tests spanning decades, we’ve rear-ended Volvos, front-ended Volvos, sideswiped them, wrapped them around poles, rolled them over, and dropped them unceremoniously on their roofs.
Out of this destruction have emerged some of the most constructive ideas in the history of automotive safety: 3-point seat belts,* laminated safety glass,
back-up braking systems, to name just a few. Today, these Volvo innovations are required by law on all cars. In designing the Volvo GLE, Volvo engineers have
taken one more giant leap forward. Literally. They plunged five 760s off a loading dock to a concrete floor 45 feet below.
What we learned from the dummies strapped inside, together with data collected from hundreds of other crash tests, has helped make the Volvo 760 GLE a car that even our safety engineers are impressed with.
And as you might imagine, that’s one group that's not easily impressed.
* We would like to remind you that a seat belt can’t save your life if you don’t use it. Buckle up!

Hot baths, zinc treatments, and other secrets that prolong life.
Cars, like people, live longer when their bodies are well taken care of.
And few bodies are better prepared to face the years than the body of a Volvo 760 GLE.
The #1 killer of a car body is rust. So Volvo employs the #1 antidote: zinc.
32 square feet of sheet metal in every Volvo body takes a hot bath in liquid zinc, resulting in a coating three times thicker than you’ll find in most other cars.
Then, after a thorough cleansing, an inspection, and a rub down, the Volvo body is ready for painting. (A process so impressive, other manufacturers of imported cars have come to our plant to observe it.)
It starts with another bath, this time in a vat of primer. An electric charge is sent through the car's body, fusing paint to metal. Next comes something most other car makers leave out; a layer of special chip resistant paint is applied to the car where flying stones hurt the most: below the beltline. Then come four more layers of paint, sprayed wet on wet to create a deep, lustrous finish. Next the car is undercoated inside and out.
Finally, a special anti-corrosive gel is injected into closed sections like roof pillars to prevent rusting from within.
As those other car makers will tell you, the whole process is tedious and takes hours.
But when you want a car to last as long as a Volvo, there are no shortcuts.
