    DESCRIPTION:
NO MATTER WHERE A VOLVO EATS, IT ALWAYS HAS A BALANCED DIET
The Volvo 140 Series comes with a system that's designed to feed the engine the exact fuel/air mixture required for all conditions.
It's a fuel injection system called Continuous Injection. Or Cl.
To start with, Cl uses an incredibly sensitive air sensor to tell the engine exactly how much fuel it can burn at that moment.
This air sensor can vary the richness of the fuel/air mixture to ensure good torque over the entire range of engine speeds.
There’s also a second sensor just for low temperatures: a bimetallic valve that orders up extra fuel to help keep the engine from stumbling and stalling on cold mornings.
Of course, with this emphasis on precision, you might expect the Volvo to require
some specially refined fuel. But it doesn’t.
It runs on ordinary, regular gas.
Now in addition to guaranteeing the Volvo a balanced diet, the Cl system also makes sure the Volvo gets enough to eat.
Instead of being squirted into the air stream and wafted into the cylinders through the intake manifold, the fuel is sprayed directly into the intake ports at four-and-a-half times normal atmospheric pressure.
So when you give'er the gas, the engine won't hesitate or balk.
In stop-and-go traffic, the engine won’t go-and-stop (a condition known as engine surge).
And other problems, like afterburning and vapor lock, simply evaporate.
At this point, you're probably wondering why — if this system is so great - all car makers don't have it.
    Perhaps, because it’s expensive.
But at Volvo we feel it’s worth it. After all, what kind of performance can you expect from a car that’s driving around undernourished?
A POWER STRUGGLE IN THE BRAKES COULD TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR CAR.
A minor difference in braking power between wheels can make a tremendous difference in where your car ends up.
So every Volvo comes with disc brakes on all four wheels. Because disc brakes are less likely to produce fluctuations in braking power.
After repeated hard stops, for instance, their design makes them more resistant to fade than conventional drum brakes.
And unlike drum brakes, discs are unsusceptible to what’s called “self-servo” action. This occurs when the rotation of a brake drum pulls the shoe outwards. And it could produce a force in one wheel strong enough to make you skid into the next lane.
Of course, there is one place where you want your brake system to work unequally: the hydraulic system.
Because in a hard stop, the rear wheels tend to lock up before the front wheels.
So every Volvo has two valves that actually proportion the hydraulic pressure between the front and rear wheels. When you slam on the brakes, it helps reduce the chances that you’ll wind up swapping ends.
At Volvo, there’s nothing more important to us than maintaining a balance in the stopping power on each wheel.
Because in a struggle between the brakes, if one wins, you lose.
    VOLVO

    S OWNER PROTECTION PLAN.
Before your new Volvo so much as taps bumpers with another car in a parking lot, we'll have slammed dozens of Volvos into reinforced concrete barriers in tests up to 50 m.p.h.
We're sorry to report that this wasn’t one of them.
But we're happy to report that the driver of this Volvo was able to go out and get another one.
Note that behind the windshield, this Volvo has not been deformed.
That’s because the front end is designed to absorb impact to protect the passenger compartment. And to protect the passengers even further. Volvo surrounds them with a steel cage. Six box-section steel pillars, strong enough to support six Volvos piled on top, are an integral part of every Volvo body.
Lots of car makers have elaborate plans for protecting their cars.
Volvo takes elaborate pains to protect the people inside.
